Nearly 700 DMK cadres were arrested today for staging a black flag demonstration against Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit's visit to review implementation of schemes pertaining to 'Swachh Bharat' mission at a village in the district.
The protest, led by former Minister and DMK MLA Ponmudi, in front of the Collectorate here, saw the partymen raising slogans against the governor.
The DMK has been claiming that such review meetings held by the governor amounted to "interference" in the state's autonomy, a charge rejected by the Raj Bhavan and the ruling AIADMK besides the BJP.
The party has been holding similar protests during Purohit's field visits to various districts in the state.
