"Double" life term for two in murder case

A local court today sentenced two persons to "double life imprisonment" in a murder case registered in 2011.

Five other accused in the case were sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, eight youths-- Balamurugan, Manikandan, Ramu, Mani, Vadivel, Ramesh, Soundar and Veeramani-- had taken liquor near a tea shop at Uchaparampu Medu under Oomachikulam police station limits.

Two persons-- Manikandavelu and Viswanathan-- reprimanded the youths for drinking near the tea shop.

Angry over it, the youths quarelled with them and stabbed them killing both on the spot.

Oomachikulam police registered a case of double murder against the eight persons. Veeramani died during the trial.
 

Additoinal District Judge S Srinivasan sentenced Balamurugan and Manikandan to double life imprisonment. Five others were sentenced to one-time life imprisonment.

The Judge, however, ordered that the double life imprisoment should run concurrently.
