Two notorious offenders, who were allegedly involved in over 200 chain snatchings in last two years, were today arrested and 6.3 kgs of stolen gold ornaments worth Rs 1.7 crore were seized from them.

Commissioner's Task Force (East Zone) team nabbed Sayeed Hussain, against whom over 100 non-bailable warrants were pending, and Mirza Azmath Ali Baig at Gulzar House here and found that the duo committed 228 chain snatchings since 2012 in the city, Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy told reporters.

Hussain and Baig used high speed bikes for committing the snatchings and would select women walking at isolated places. They targeted the victims from behind and opposite directions, Reddy said.

Hussain, who is a habitual snatcher and arrested previously, after his release from jail created panic among the public by committing snatchings and threatening people with knife if resisted, he said.

Last month, Hussain assaulted two police constables and stabbed one of them when they chased and tried to nab him at L B Nagar.

He later burnt their bike, the police officer said adding that as many as 106 NBWs were pending against Hussain.

Baig was earlier arrested in May this year in connection with 13 chain-snatching cases. After his release, he again started committing the offences alongwith his close friend Hussain.

Reddy said henceforth, repeat professional offenders involved in large number of chain snatchings will be booked under the stringent Prevention of Detention (PD) Act.

Besides Hussain and Baig, police also arrested three receivers of the stolen property and efforts were on to nab two other absconding persons who received the booty, and another snatcher Mohd Akheeluddin.

Apart from the stolen gold ornaments, two bikes, knife and seven cell phones were also seized from the duo, Reddy added.
