EC approves rationalisation schedule for polling stations

The Election Commission today approved a detailed programme for rationalisation of polling booths in Punjab and said that the Assistant Returning Officer of each assembly will personally verify electoral stations.
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer V K Singh said the detailed physical verification to check basic minimum facilities and other aspects will be carried out on April 1.
Giving details of fixing the norms for rationalisation of polling stations, Singh said that 100 per cent physical verification of polling stations will be done by the Assistant Returning Officer (AERO) of each assembly segment.

Polling stations should be located in schools, government or semi-government buildings, he said.
A new polling station will be set up if the number of electors is more than 1,200 in a rural area and 1,400 in an urban area, he said.
Punjab is scheduled to go to polls early next year.
