The state education department has ordered an inquiry into an incident where students of a local school were allegedly caned by one of its trustees.
Rajendra Ahire, Deputy Director of Education, Mumbai Division, told PTI that he had ordered the Education Officer (Secondary) Thane Zilla Parishad to conduct an inquiry and submit a report.
Eighteen students suffered injuries after they were allegedly beaten up on Wednesday for creating noise in the process of shifting benches and chairs while preparing for a school event scheduled for later this month, officials said.

Parents of the students, some of whom suffered fractures, had filed a case with Thane police against the trustee of the school, officials added.
A delegation of the Thane Matadata Jagran Abhiyan and the Nationalist Congres Party's OBC Cell, comprising Ghanshyam Sonar and Raj Rajapurkar, had met Ahire today and demanded strict action against the trustee.
