A 60-year-old man, who was reportedly upset over police inaction in registering a dowry harassment case, committed suicide at Purbaliyan village here today.
According to the victim's family, Akhtar took the extreme step as the police failed to register an FIR against the harassment of his daughter by her in-laws for dowry.
Circle Officer Rajiv Kumar Singh said five persons, including the son-in-law of the deceased, have been booked for dowry.
Singh said Akhtar's daughter married Mir Hasan in 2012. Hasan and his family used to harass the deceased's daughter over dowry and the woman was living with her parents since April 1.
An inquiry has also been ordered into the allegations of police inaction in registering an FIR in the case, the officer added.
