An electricity department team was today held hostage allegedly by villagers of Baj Bagaar village of Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagdish Sharma, a transformer had burnt in Baj Bagaar village under Chilakana Police Station four months back. The villagers had been requesting the concerned authorities to replace the burnt transformer with a new one, but still it wasn't replaced.

When a team from the electricity department reached the village today, the irate villagers started protesting against the department and allegedly held the team hostage, Sharma said.

The villagers contended that since there was no electricity in the village, then why should they pay their respective bills.

After a while, when police arrived on the spot, they rescued the team.
