A five-month-old elephant calf that slipped and fell into a water tank in a private farm near Periyanaickenpalayam here, was rescued today, forest officials said.

The incident occurred when the department officials chased away a herd of elephants, trying to enter Rayarathupatti, around 6 AM.

In the melee, a five-month-old calf accidentally fell into the water tank of the farm and was struggling for life, department sources said.

The officials, with the assistance of locals, managed to drive away the herd, and pulled out the calf safely.

Later, it was released into the jungle, they said.
