The carcass of an elephant was today found at Balubari in Siliguri sub-division of Darjeeling district, forest officials said.
The carcass of the eight-year-old elephant was first spotted by locals who informed the forest department this morning.
Forest officials said a herd of elephants came out from the nearby forest in search of food last night and the elephant might have strayed from them.
The cause of the death would be known after post-mortem, they said.
