An elephant today trampled a 40-year-old police driver to death at a village in Sitamarhi district of Bihar.

The wild elephant who reached Harpurva village from a Nepal forest trampled to death Hulas Rai while he was trying to chase away the animal with the help of local people, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Akhilesh Kumar Singh said.

Rai, posted as driver at Bajpatti police station, died on the spot, he said.

Forest teams from Muzaffarpur and Parna were trying to catch the pachyderm, Singh said.

The SDO, who is camping in the village, said that the elephant appeared to be agitated and unable to stand or rest at one place as a huge crowd was trailing behind it.

Announcement was being made through loudspeaker asking people to leave the elephant alone so that it could be caught safely.
