A 45-year-old villager was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Raghunathpur village in Seraikela-Kharswan district in Jharkhand, police today said.

The incident occurred when villagers were trying to drive away a herd of wild elephants back into the nearby forest last evening.

While doing so, Diwakar Mahato slipped and fell down when the pachyderm trampled him to death, police said.

Villagers alleged that the elephants have been in the village for the past few days and damaging crops but the forest department has not done anything.
