Press Trust of India Chennai
Ennore Port Limited was today officially renamed as Kamarajar Port after the veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Shipping Minister GK Vasan released the government order in this regard at a function here and also inaugurated the name board to mark the renaming process.

He said a nine feet tall statue of the late leader will be installed in the Port premises.

Kamarajar port was one of the top performing ones in India, he said, adding, projects proposed for it include development of LNG Terminal at an investment of Rs 4,512 crore besides a container terminal at a proposed Rs 1,270 crore for which an agreement would be signed soon.

Kamaraj, a respected leader and often described as the architect of modern Tamil Nadu, was known for his pioneering efforts including introducing the free noon-meal scheme for children in schools besides heralding the state's industrialisation.

The Union cabinet had given its nod on February 20 this year for renaming the port after him. It is one of the 12 major ports in India which started functioning in 2001 and is a 'schedule B' Mini Ratna Company.

The capacity of the port at present is 31 million tonnes. It has six berths including three for coal and one for iron ore.
