The police today arrested one person from Seraikela on the charge of extorting over Rs three lakh from a woman shop owner, impersonating as a police officer.

The victim, Saraswati Devi, has alleged that she has given him Rs 3.24 lakh in several instalments between 2014 and June 30 this year, Superintendent of Police Indrajeet Mahatha said.

The accused, 25-year-old Sanjeev Mahato, was arrested from Ichapur during a raid conducted on the basis of an FIR lodged by Saraswati Devi, a widow.

Mahatha said the accused introduced himself as an SP to the woman in 2013. He demanded money from her the next year threatening her to implicate her in false cases.

She gave him Rs 50,000 at that time. Thereafter, he demanded and got money from her several times with the last one being Rs 17,000 on June 30 last.

Saraswati Devi complained to Mahatha on July 22 about this and Mahato was arrested today.
