A 44-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at his residence in Nashik district, police said today.

Ananda Yadav Ahire, hailing from Dhundaje village in Malegaon tehsil, took the extreme step last night. He was taken to Malegaon civil hospital where he was declared brought dead, an official of Vander-Khakudi police station said.

The farmer had taken loan of Rs seven lakh from a local society. He suffered losses to crop due to untimely rains and hence was unable to pay the loan. This could have led the farmer to take the extreme step, police said.
