A 45-year-old farmer was shot dead by unidentified criminals when he was returning home in Shamli district last evening.
Police said Ombir, a resident of Lilon village in the district, was shot at close range by unidentified criminals. He died on the spot.
After the incident, locals refused to hand over the body to police, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.
Soon, senior police officers visited the spot and pacified the locals. The body was then sent for post-mortem.
