The fire was spotted at about 10.30 am in the four-storied Central Market near Tinkonia bus stand on Grand Trunk Road.

Four fire tenders -- three from Burdwan town and one from Bhatar, about 30 km away -- fought the blaze for more than four-and-a-half hours to bring the blaze under control.

The fire originated from a sports goods godown situated in the basement and quickly spread. The market houses 120 shops with many of them having gas cyclinders, sources said.

However, no casualty or injury was reported. Part of the roof of the godown collapsed, sources said adding that the extent of damage was being assessed.

Personnel of the civil defence, RAF and the police cordoned off the area which was engulfed by thick smoke.

Locals, who complained that the fire brigade personnel arrived late, tried to block District Magistrate Omkar Singh Meena's vehicle but the situation was brought under control.

The DM said legal action would be initiated against the sports godown owner for stocking inflammable goods.
