Five children die daily at PGIMER, Chandigarh

Five children, aged less than 13 years, die on an average daily at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh while undergoing treatment, according to an RTI.

Senior Medical Record Manager Lakhbeer Dhaliwal from the institute said that every year at-least 1,800 children succumb to their ailments in the hospital.

He said that 338 pregnant women also died in the hospital in the span of last five years.

According to data available, 1,810 sick children perished in 2009 whereas 1,930 breathed their last in 2010.

This figure rose to 2,069 in 2011 and to 2,087 in 2012.
 

Last year, 2,061 kids were killed by their diseases, Dhaliwal said.
