Five Haryana players honoured with national awards

President Pranab Mukherjee has honoured five players and a coach from Haryana with national awards for their outstanding performances at a function on the occasion of National Sports Day in New Delhi today, the state Assembly was informed.

Haryana Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Anil Vij told the ongoing Monsoon session of Vidhan Sabha wrestler Sakshi Malik of Rohtak has been honoured with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.

She won Bronze medal in wrestling in the Rio Olympics.

Rani Rampal, hockey player from Rohtak; Vinesh Phogat, women wrestler from Bhiwani; Amit Kumar, wrestler from Rohtak; and Virender Singh, Paralympics wrestler from Jhajjar have been honoured with Arjuna Award.
 

Wrestling Coach Mahavir Singh of Bhiwani has been honoured with the Dronacharya Award.

Vij said it is a matter of pride for the state.

While Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award carries Rs 7.50 lakh in cash and a medal, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award carry Rs five lakh in cash and a certificate of appreciation.
