Five heavily-armed militants were killed when army foiled a major infiltration bid from across the border in north Kashmir's Kupwara district today.
Five militants, trying to sneak into Kashmir, were killed in a fierce gunbattle with troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector, a Defence spokesman said.
Acting on specific information that militants might attempt infiltration in the Keran sector, he said the army noticed 8 to 9 ultras moving in the forest area of Farkian Gali, some 500-mt on Indian side of the LoC.

"The militants were immediately engaged in the firefight by the troops. This resulted in elimination of five militants while the remaining fled towards the Line of Control under the cover of thick foliage," the spokesman said.
The operation in the area was still in progress and some war-like stores had been recovered from the scene, he said.
Srinagar-based Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Gurmit Singh commended the troops for their high degree of alertness.
