The incident took place on the staircase of a residential building, Laxmi Tara, at busy Dange Chowk at Pimpri and comes over a fortnight after a series of low- intensity explosions rocked Pune.
Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjeev Singhal, who ruled out any terror or sabotage angle in the blast, said prima facie it appeared that a high tension wire going through that area got snapped, leading to a short circuit and resulting in burn injuries to the boy who happened to be on the staircase of the building.
"There is nothing suggesting a terrorist angle to the incident," he told PTI, stating there was no need for panic.
The boy, Piyush Walunje, has been admitted to a local hospital with severe burn injuries, police said.
A bomb disposal of squad visited the spot to investigate the incident. Pieces of electric wires were found scattered at the site of the blast, they added.
