Press Trust of India New Delhi
The Foreign Correspondent's Club today condemned the attack on journalists by lawyers in the Patiala House court complex terming it as an attempt to "intimidate" the media from doing its job.

Stating that freedom of speech lies at the very "heart of democracy", the journalists' body said.

"We strongly condemn the way in which national and international media representatives were mishandled. Like the Editor's Guild, we see it as an attempt to intimidate journalists through physical violence and prevent us journalists from doing our job," it said in a statement.

Yesterday, journalists, students and teachers of JNU were beaten up allegedly by groups of lawyers within and outside Patiala House court complex where JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was to be produced before a metropolitan magistrate for remand proceedings.

Earlier, the Guild took serious note of the assault and condemned the incident, referring to first person accounts pointing towards "physical assault by lawyers allegedly supporting BJP" as Delhi Police personnel "stood by and watched".
