Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister and Lok Sabha member from Kangra, Shanta Kumar has demanded municipal corporation status for Palampur civic body.
His demand comes close on the heels of the state government's decision to grant municipal corporation status to Solan municipal council.
"Palampur is a fast growing town and number of institutions like Agriculture University, CSIR, Vivekananda Hospital and scores of departmental offices are located here.
"The civic amenities are not enough to cope with population which is constantly on the rise ... Upgradation of municipal council into municipal corporation would go a long way in improving the civic amenities," he said in a letter addressed to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.
"The matter has also been discussed with Assembly Speaker BBL Butail, who is also the MLA from Palampur and he fully concurred with me," he said.
