A former Senior Medical Officer (SMO) has been sentenced to three years of imprisonment by a court here in a graft case.

Besides sentencing former SMO Achla Bhatia yesterday, District and Sessions Judge B S Sandhu also sentenced a chemist to two years imprisonment for conniving with her.

However, the court acquitted two pharmacists Ramesh Bedi and Balkrishan giving them the benefit of doubt.

According to the prosecution, the former SMO, who was also chairperson of purchase committee, in connivance with Sanjiv Kumar of a local medical store had prepared bogus bills to the tune of Rs 36 lakh.

Bhatia was SMO at the local civil hospital between 2010 and 2012.

The Vigilance Bureau had registered a case against four persons under various sections of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act last year.
