Four people died in Hong Kong after a mini bus collided with a cargo truck today in a rare road accident in the city's north, police said.

The fatal road collision, which took place in the rural Yuen Long district of the southern Chinese city, also resulted in multiple injuries.

"At 4.42 AM...There was a collision between a medium goods vehicle and a mini bus, there are many injuries and initially, four fatalities have been reported," a police spokeswoman told AFP, without elaborating.

News footage from the city's Cable Television, which reported 10 injuries from the crash, showed a heavily damaged mini bus flipped on its side with glass scattered all over the road.

Paramedics were filmed transporting injured people on stretchers while reports said a number of passengers were trapped in the bus following the crash.

Hong Kong's mini buses, which can seat around 15 passengers each, carried about 1.8 million passengers daily in 2014.

Accidents are rare on the southern Chinese city's public transport system, which it promotes as one of the best infrastructures in the world.

Over 70 people were injured in 2013 when a two-car train derailed on the city's light railway, throwing passengers onto the floor.

The safety of Hong Kong's waterways has also remained under scrutiny since 39 people were killed when a high-speed ferry and a pleasure boat crashed in 2012.

At least 100 people were injured in October when a high- speed ferry travelling from Macau to Hong Kong hit an "unidentified object" in the water.
