Fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand hills including chardham and an overcast sky coupled with moderate rain in the lower areas caused the temperature to drop sharply today across the state reviving wintry conditions.

All the four Himalayan shrines including Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri received fresh snowfall whereas most places in the plains received showers, Disaster Management and temple officials said.

Kedarnath where snowfall began in the morning lies under about five ft of snow, Rudraprayag Disaster Management Officer Ashish Kumar said.

Badrinath and adjoining areas also received fresh snowfall bringing down the temperatures, Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer Nand Kishore Joshi said.

The weather remained cloudy and windy in the lower areas of the district adding to the chill, he said.

Himalayan temples of Gangotri and Yamunotri in Uttarkashi district also received snow, Gangotri Mandir Samitichairman Mukesh Semwal said.

Gomukh from where the Ganga originates and Harshil, a picturesque tourist resort near Gangotri also received snow, he said.

Meanwhile, rain coupled with icy winds lashed the plains including Dehradun and Haridwar making people shiver.

The MeT department said the maximum temperature in the town today was likely to record a sharp fall of ten degree Celsius in comparison to yesterday's 24.3 deg C.
