American horror film franchise "Friday the 13th" is being made into a TV series.

The series featuring masked serial killer Jason Voorhees is officially in development with writers Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle on-board, reported Deadline.

The duo is planning a horror/crime thriller firmly grounded in reality, with a detective's search for his missing brother throwing up a connection to Jason, who was long believed dead.

Executive producers on the hour-long series will include Sean S Cunningham, who directed the original movie in 1980.

Talk of a possible "Friday the 13th TV" adaptation first surfaced a year ago.

A series of 12 feature films have explored Jason's relationship to Crystal Lake and his own twisted family dynamic.

The most recent "Friday the 13th" movie was a 2009 reboot produced by Michael Bay and starring Derek Mears as Jason, with Hannibal writer Nick Antosca penning a sequel script for a mooted May 2016 release.
