The city police today arrested the leader of an inter-state gang who allegedly stole personal belongings or ornaments by posing as a policeman and pretending to conduct a frisking.

A team of commissioner's task force, central zone, nabbed Tanveer Hussain Ali, leader of 'Irani gang', here and recovered 500 grams of gold ornaments and biscuits worth Rs 15 lakh from his possession, police said.

Tanveer confessed to involvement in eight offences, police said. The members of the gang, who hail either from Bidar in Karnataka or Mumbai, belong to the Irani community.

Members of the gang stopped the pedestrian, introduced themselves as policemen or customs officials in civil dress, and on the pretext of conducting a search, relieved him of ornaments or money by diverting his attention, said the deputy commissioner of police B Limba Reddy.

Other members of the gang are yet to be arrested.
