An 18-year-old girl, who was in a relationship with a minor boy, immolated herself today in Lalganj area after her "lover" kept silent when a panchayat asked if he was willing to marry her, police said.
The girl and minor boy, who belong to the same village, were allegedly having an affair. When the girl's family got to know about the relationship, they got her engaged to someone else, they said.
The girl then reached the boy's house and persuaded him to elope with her. When villagers came to know about this, a panchayat meeting was called during which the boy remained silent when asked if he was willing to marry the girl.
Agitated over this, the girl set herself on fire at her house, police said, adding, she he was rushed to the district hospital in a serious condition where doctors declared her dead.
