GNLA militant rounded up

A militant of the Garo

National Liberation Army, who is one of the "most wanted", was apprehnded by a joint team of the Army and Assam, Meghalaya police at Boko, near here, and arms were seized from him, defence sources said today.

Acting on information, troops of the Army's Red Horn Division along with the police of Assam and Meghalaya launched a joint operation at Shantipur in the Boko police station area yesterday and nabbed the extremist, the sources said.

The ultra was identified as Ramu Chandra Marak, 26, having close links with top commanders of GNLA.

A 9mm pistol, a magazine, three live rounds, eight extortion demand pads, two stamp pads and a radio set were seized from him, they added.
 

During initial questioning, it was revealed that the underground activist was extensively involved in extortion, kidnappings, supplying weapons and other acts of terrorism in the adjoining districts on Assam and Meghalaya border, the sources said.

There are also several cases registered against him in North Garo Hills and Ribhoi district police stations of Meghalaya.
