Gold, UAE dirhams seized from passengers

Air Customs officials at the Kochi International Airport here have seized gold worth about Rs 17 lakh from a Sri Lankan national, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur by an Air Asia flight this morning, officials said.

The passenger Muhammad Zafri was intercepted by the officials of the Air Intelligence Unit at the airport as he tried to smuggle out 642 grams gold, Customs officials said.

In another incident, the Air Intelligence officials detained two persons belonging to Kudak in Karnataka for their alleged bid to smuggle UAE dirhams equal to Rs 38 lakh to Dubai via Kochi airport this morning.
 

They were intercepted when they were about to board an Emirates flight.

While UAE dirham equal to Rs 23 lakh was seized from Muhammed Ansari, Rs 15 lakh worth dirham was seized from Ansari.

Both were planning to fly together to Dubai in an Emirates flight, officials said.
