The last date for filing Income Tax returns for taxpayers in Jammu and Kashmir was again extended to September 30 by the government today, in the wake of the ongoing turmoil in the state.

"On consideration of reports of dislocation of general life in certain areas of state of Jammu and Kashmir, the CBDT, in exercise of powers conferred under section 119 of the I-T Act, hereby further extends the due date for filing return of Income from August 31, 2016 to September 30, 2016, in case of assessees in the state of Jammu and Kashmir who are required to file their return by the said due date...," an order issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in this regard said.

The CBDT is the policy making body for the Income Tax department.

The government had earlier extended the due date for filing IT returns for Jammu and Kashmir to August 31, from the earlier deadline of July 31. The extension pertains to the tax returns for Assessment Year 2016-17.

The CBDT had also extended the deadline up to August 5 for other assessees liable to file I-T returns across the country.
