Farmers in Uttarakhand will be granted proprietary rights over whichever group of land they occupy, Chief Minister Harish Rawat said here today.

"Our government has taken the historic decision of giving land ownership rights to farmers occupying different types of land, including those in category 1,3 and 4," Rawat announced at a Kisan rally at Rambhawan Dharamshala.

Land ownership rights will be given to Van Gujjars and people living in slums, he said.

He said remaining dues of sugarcane growers will be paid before the next crushing season begins.

Announcing a loan of Rs 50 crore, taken through co-operatives, to settle dues of sugarcane growers, he gave a cheque of Rs 16.72 crore to the Chief Manager of Co-operative Sugar Mill Bajpur Tirathpal.

"The state government plans to modernise sugar mills and has sought a financial assistance of Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre," he said.
