In a bid to enhance efficiency of the police, a global positioning system (GPS) was installed in police control room (PCR) vans in this south Odisha town increasing their area of coverage.

This has been done in view of the increasing vehicular traffic and reports of crime from residential areas.

Now, PCR vans would cover the entire town and respond to emergency situations in quick time. The town is divided into four sectors with each PCR van being assigned one, the police said.

Earlier, PCR vans with six police personnel, including the driver, each used to patrol only the main roads. Increasing vehicular traffic and reports of crime from residential areas are some of the reasons for increasing the area of coverage of PCR vehicles, said a senior police officer.

Police also installed a round-the-clock mobile telephone in the control room to receive complaints and information about accidents, traffic congestions, movement of criminals and other law and order problems.
