Gujarat BJP president Jitu Vaghani retained the Bhavnagar (west) assembly seat today, defeating Congress candidate Dilipsinh Gohil by a margin of 27,185 votes.

Vaghani, a prominent Patidar community leader, was appointed the state BJP chief in August 2016. His appointment came after Vijay Rupani, who held the post then, was made the chief minister.

Vaghani had cut his teeth in politics as a leader of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

He made his maiden entry into the Assembly in 2012 elections from the same seat after unsuccessfully contesting from Bhavnagar (south) in 2007.
