Gujarat in command against Vidarbha

Riding on brilliant bowling by Rush Kalaria (5/32) and Jasprit Bumrah (4/30), Gujarat bundled out Vidarbha for a paltry 85 and then themselves reached a comfortable 153 for three at stumps on day one of a Ranji Trophy Group A match here today.

Electing to field, Gujarat medium pacers wreaked havoc to wrap up the hosts for less than 100 runs in their first innings.

As they fell like a pack of cards, only three Vidarbha batsmen -- opener Faiz Fazal (31), Ranjit Paradkar (17 not out) and Umesh Yadav (16) -- could touch the double digit mark.

Besides Kalaria and Bumrah chipping in with nine scalps between them, Rakesh Dhruv (1/02) claimed a wicket.

Gujarat bowlers never let the host batsmen settle down, reducing them to 21 for four in just 13.4 overs. There were only two brief partnerships -- 25 runs for the fifth wicket between Fazal and Rashmi Parida and another 29-run stand for the ninth wicket between Paradkar and Yadav.

In reply, Gujarat got off to a fine start with openers Smit Patel (73) and Samit Gohel (36) sharing an 88-run stand for the first wicket to lay a solid platform.

Despite both their opening batsmen getting out and one-down Manpreet Juneja (9) back into the pavilion, Gujarat already have taken a 68 runs lead with seven wickets remaining.

At stumps, Parthiv Patel was unbeaten on 31 and Mehul Patel was yet to open his account.

Brief scores:

Vidarbha 1st innings: 85 all out in 32.4 overs (Faiz Fazal 31, Ranjit Paradkar not out 17; Rush Kalaria 5/32, Jasprit Bumrah 4/30).

Gujarat 1st innings: 153 for three in 52 overs (Smit Patel 73, Samit Gohel 36; Sumit Ruikar 2/30).
