Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan today appealed people to become "green soldiers".

"Dr Harsh Vardhan appealed people to become 'green soldiers' in order to realise the dream of 'New India' by 2022 as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi," said a release issued by the Gujarat information department.

The minister was speaking at a seminar on 'Big Cats: Predators under Threat', organised by his ministry and the state government at Sasan Gir in Junagadh district, the habitat of Asiatic lions, to mark the World Wildlife Day.

Later, speaking to reporters, he said, "We should create a movement of 'green good deeds' for the protection of wildlife, to make environment better and to return to our kids the kind of environment our grandfathers bequeathed to us."

The event was also attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Minister of State for Forest and Environment Ganpat Vasava.

Rupani noted that thanks to the help extended by local people and the environment-friendly policies of his government, the number of lions in Gujarat has increased to around 600.

Vasava announced a development package of Rs 15 crore for the Gir National Park on this occasion.
