The Calcutta High Court today acquitted a labourer serving life imprisonment in a murder case for want of evidence.

A division bench of the court comprising Justice Aniruddha Basu and Shibshankar Sadhu ruled that Jagat Sarkar, held guilty by a Howrah additional sessions court in 2008 of killing Shakti Chatterjee in 2005, be set free from the charges as there was no evidence of his involvement.

The court observed that the police recovered the body and arrested Sarkar, who worked as a labourer, without evidence.
