Madras High Court Bench here today directed District Collectors of Tiruchirappalli and Karur to inspect if sand was being mined illegally on the Cauvery river bed and submit reports.
Justices S Manikumar and G Chockalingam gave this direction on a public interest litigation filed by C Sivakumar of Erode, who alleged illegal sand mining was openly taking place at nine sites, including eight in Karur district.
Police were filing false cases against people who questioned the illegal activities and intimidated them, he alleged.
The court adjourned the matter to July last week.
