The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court today ordered issuance of a notice to officials, including the Tamil Nadu Home Secretary and the Director General of Police, on a petition by a woman seeking action against eight police personnel who she alleged had brutally attacked her husband resulting in his death in a prison last year.
When the petition came up for hearing, Justice M M Sundaresh ordered notice to the respondents.
Petitioner Maheswari alleged that her husband Isakki was taken to Anna Nagar police station here on July 11, 2014 in connection with a criminal complaint against him and brutally attacked by eight police personnel, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police and two Inspectors, for three days.

He was later produced before a court after a false murder case was foisted against him, remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Dindigul prison. On July 21, the prison authorities said he died and a suspicious death case was registered.
The petitioner alleged that her husband died only due to the assault by police personnel and to safeguard them, a case of death under suspicious circumstances registered.
She had sent a representation to the officials seeking appropropriate action against the eight police personnel and compensation as her husband was the sole bread-winner and she had four children.
The petitioner sought an interim compensation for running the family and also to take disciplinary action against the police personnel.
