Western television series 'Hell on Wheels' has been renewed for a fifth and final season.

AMC cable network announced that 14 episodes will be split across 2015 and 2016, bringing a close to the television Western.

Seven episodes will premiere next summer, with the final seven to air one year later, reported Deadline.

'Hell on Wheels' is currently airing its fourth season, as the drama series about the Union Pacific Railroad shifts to an 1867 setting.

Anson Mount leads the cast as Cullen Bohannon, an ex-Confederate soldier bent on avenging the deaths of his wife and son.

Colm Meaney, Common and Tom Noonan have supporting roles in Hell on Wheels, which was created by Joe Gayton ('Bulletproof') and Tony Gayton ('The Salton Sea').

AMC President Charlie Collier announced the final season, saying, "With season five of 'Hell on Wheels', we are proud to bring our trans-continental journey to conclusion for the large, loyal audience that has travelled with Cullen Bohannon and his crew for so many years.

"We look forward to appropriately honouring Hell on Wheels in this final season. Enormous thanks to the terrific writers, cast and crew for all they have achieved and for all that lies ahead in the Wild West.
