HJC demands scrapping of Gorakhpur nuke project

Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) today demanded that the 2,800 MW nuclear power plant project at Gorakhpur village in Fatehabad district be scrapped while also advocating that Chandigarh be transferred to Punjab.

"We don't need such power plants. Rather, we should opt for solar and biogas power," HJC president and MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi said in the state Assembly.

Bishnoi demanded that the Rs 23,502-crore project, which former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation stone for in January last year, be "scrapped".

He also sought to know BJP's stance on the project saying that its leaders had alongside HJC's leaders taken part in numerous agitations in the past against this project.

Bishnoi said Haryana should have no problem in giving up its right over Chandigarh, the common capital, to be handed over to Punjab, provided that, in return "we get our rightful share of (Ravi-Beas) waters and Hindi speaking areas are also transferred to us."

The former MP suggested that Hisar can very well come up as a capital town and the area will also get its due as it has been "discriminated" against for years now.

Bishnoi's party had severed ties with BJP weeks before last year's Assembly polls in October owing to disagreement over seat sharing and other issues.

BJP went on to fight on its own and formed its government in the state for the first time.

Kuldip and his wife Renuka are the only two HJC members in the 90-member Assembly.
