The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education today suspended the headmaster of a school in Jalpaiguri on charges of opening the sealed cover of two question papers of Secondary Examination before the start of the exams in March.

Board president Kalyanmoy Ganguly told reporters here that Haridayal Roy, headmaster of Maynaguri Subhasnagar High School, has been suspended after an inquiry committee, formed by the WBBSE on March 23 found as true the charges against him.

Roy had opened sealed question papers of Mathematics and English, one hour before the start of the examination.

"While we are issuing suspension order against Haridayal Roy, disciplinary proceedings were being initiated against English teacher Biswajit Roy for videographing the strong room (where the questions were kept) breaking rules," Ganguly said.

The School Inspector Biswanath Bhowmick would be showcaused by the education department for giving unverified statements to the media and in public on the issue, he said.

Additional Venue Supervisor Mantu Roy was being cautioned for not performing his job in a proper manner to prevent the incident, the Board said.

History Teacher Samrat Biswas, who was charged with changing his statement several times, will also be cautioned and asked to be more careful with his conduct in future, the Board president said.

West Bengal Education minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters at another function, "These steps were required. Otherwise a wrong message would have gone against the Board examination system of the state."

Meanwhile, the Headmaster said in Jalpaiguri, "I do own up the mistakes and accept the decision of the Board. But I maintain that the seal of English paper had been opened by me sometime before the examination as instructed by an official. I had opened the seal of the Mathematics paoper on my own for proper sorting."

"If opening the seal of English paper was not a crime, how can the opening the seal of mathematics paper be interpreted in a different way?" he said.

WBBSE earlier had conducted a marathon hearing where the statements of Roy and four others were recorded.
