Home Guard shot dead by wife beater

A Home Guard was shot dead in the city by a man after he tried to stop the latter from beating up his own wife early today, the police said.

The incident occurred at around 1 AM when home guard Raju Goala and constable Wahid Alam were patrolling Haridevpur locality.

Ashok Das, a resident of the area, had a quarrel with his wife and was beating her up at that time, the police said.

When Raju and Alam interfered and tried to stop Das, he snatched the service revolver of Raju in the melee and shot him.

"Raju died later and Alam was injured. Das was also beaten up by the public following the incident. He is in hospital," the police said.
