Hurricane Michael has strengthened into a Category 3 storm as it churned in the Gulf of Mexico towards the Florida coast, the National Hurricane Center said.
The Miami-based NHC Tuesday said Michael, which is expected to make landfall on the Florida panhandle on Wednesday afternoon, had become a "major hurricane" packing winds of 120 miles (195 kilometres) per hour.
