Apparently under pressure from political parties in the wake of violence-marred civic polls, West Bengal State Election Commissioner S R Upadhyay today said he has stepped down as "he felt like resigning."

"I resigned because I felt I must resign," Upadhyay told a news channel soon after stepping down from his post.

He, however, declined to comment when asked whether there was any pressure on him to resign as the SEC after deferring the counting of votes as well as announcing repolls in a few wards in recently-held civic elections in Salt Lake, Bally and Asansol.

Upadhyay also said "there must not be any pressure from any political party to influence any decision. It is not a correct way.
