The Goa government is contemplating to enact a new legislation which attracts imprisonment for those indulging in illegal construction.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the State Legislative assembly today that a legislation is being worked on to give stringent punishment to offenders of illegal construction.

"The violator would be imprisoned so that it will act as a deterrent," the Chief Minister said, adding the current Town and Country Planning Act doesn't have enough teeth to stop illegal construction.

"Give me two to three months, I will address this issue (of enacting a new legislation)," he said.

Responding to a question on the floor of the House, Parrikar admitted that many a times local panchayat bodies delay in giving clearances which prompt illegal structures.

"Panchayats would be asked to give licenses within 45-60 days," he added.
