Inquiry ordered in Mathura jail incident

A three-member committee has been formed to probe an incident of assault inside the Mathura Jail after undertrials went on a two-day hunger strike to demand action against prison staff.

The jail staff allegedly assaulted undertrials Ram Babu and Ravi for their alleged involvement in burning few newspapers in a barrack on Friday.

A three member committee headed by ADM Law and Order Arun Kumar with city Magistrate Munindra Nath Upadhyaya and Deputy SP Anil Yadav as members has been asked to probe the incident, District Magistrate Vishal Chauhan said.

Following the incident, the undertrials in Mathura jail went on a hunger strike demanding action against prison staff.
 

"The strike was called off last evening", Chauhan said, adding, Jailor Hari Bakat Singh, who has also been accused by the undertrials for beating the prisoners, has been asked to go on leave.
