Iraqi authorities say a suicide attacker killed 16 people and wounded 35 others at a Sunni funeral in Baghdad today.

Police officials said the evening attack took place when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt inside a tent where a Sunni funeral was being held in Baghdad's southern neighbourhood of Dora.

Medics in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to talk to media.

Today's attack came only a day after a wave of attacks, mainly on a Shiite funeral in Baghdad, killed 104 people.

Violence has spiked in Iraq during the past few months. More than 4,000 people have been killed in violence between April and August.
