Delhi Police today filed a charge sheet against Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his aide Asadullah Akhtar in the September 2010 Jama Masjid attack case, saying they carried out the strike to dissuade foreign nations from participating in Commonwealth Games.

Special Cell of Delhi Police told the court that these IM operatives conspired to carry out the terror attack to portray the image of India, the host for the 2010 CWG, as a "weak and disturbed nation".

In the charge sheet, which was filed before Additional Sessions Judge Daya Prakash, Bhatkal and Akhtar have been chargesheeted for offences under the provisions of the IPC, Explosive Substances Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Information Technology Act.

The court has fixed the matter for May 22 for further hearing.

The police alleged that September 19, 2010 terror strike at Jama Masjid was carried out by the IM operatives on the instructions of their Pakistan-based leaders Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal, who are both absconding.

"It was revealed in the interrogation of these accused persons that in the year 2010, all of them along with Ahmed Siddibappa (Yasin Bhatkal), under instructions from their Pak- based commanders, had conspired to carry out terror attacks just before the beginning of the CWG 2010 to dissuade foreign nations from participating in the same and to portray image of India, the host nation, as weak and disturbed nation," the police said.

It said these accused had planned that foreign tourists found near Jama Masjid would be "randomly shot" and a bomb blast would be executed in the area for maximum casualty.

The police claimed that Yasin had prepared the pressure cooker IED, which was planted in the car parked outside Jama Masjid, and a mild explosion had taken place.
