A group of students of Jamia Millia Islamia staged a demonstration outside the university today, demanding an apology from the vice-chancellor for allegedly subjecting some students to lathicharge and detention by police during a recent protest.

On June 5, a large number of students had staged a protest against the university for inviting RSS leader Indresh Kumar for an Iftar party organised by the RSS-affiliated Muslim Rashtriya Manch.

Allegedly, six students were detained and many were lathicharged during the protest.

The students wanted to submit a memorandum demanding an apology today, but all the gates of the university that led to the office of the vice-chancellor were closed.

"All the gates to the VC's office have been locked restricting entry of students of the varsity," said a student.

Videos of students being forcefully taken into police custody were on circulation on social media. The police, however, denied detaining anyone.
